Conference programme

This year, the conference programme will have three strands: Funding and finance for FDs and their teams, Governance for college governors and academy trustees, and Leadership for all principals and senior leaders.

Conference highlights include the following:

Day 1: Wednesday 27th June 2018

  • Sam Gyimah MP, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation (tbc) will introduce one of the conference themes: how best to prepare young people for employment and Higher Education, and will address some of the implications of the new ways in which universities work
  • Lucy Crehan, author of  Cleverlands spent a month in each of five of the world’s top-performing education systems. She will reveal some of the principles underlying their success – including high expectations for all students and the practical policies and strategies that they used to make these expectations (almost) a reality
  • Panel and plenary session – four serving college principals will explore different ways to engage in System Leadership
  • Bradley Busch will consider the latest research from psychology and neuroscience on what teachers can do to best help students learn. This session will be interactive, informative and will contain strategies and tips to help colleges immediately improve performance
  • SFCA, in a closed session, will provide a short update on the 2018 pay negotiations for teaching and support staff members
  • Focused sessions on tips and guidance on CIF bidding (aimed at Finance Directors) and strengthening governance (aimed at Governors)
  • Drinks reception and Awards Dinner: a drinks reception, hosted by Elevate Education, will take place in the evening, followed by a presentation dinner where the winners of the SFCA Awards 2018 will be announced


Day 2: Thursday 28th June 2018

  • Keynote address: Roger Kneebone, Professor of Surgical Education and Engagement Science at Imperial College expects his trainee surgeons to learn creative arts and crafts as part of their medical training. He will talk about the importance of arts subjects in a broad and balanced curriculum
  • Clare Marchant, Chief Executive of UCAS, will focus her keynote on trends and developments in university admissions
  • Eileen Milner, Chief Executive of the Education and Skills Funding Agency, will share her vision and expectations for the ESFA under her leadership
  • A panel debate on ‘What are the skills and attributes expected by universities and employers and how can Sixth Form Colleges best prepare their students to thrive?’ with Clare Marchant, Chief Executive of UCAS, Harriet Jones, Senior Lecturer, UEA, and Marnie Millard, Chief Executive of Nichols and Chair of CBI’s North West Regional Council  
  • A range of workshops will take place during the day on topics including:
  • Improving value added
  • Assessing and tracking students in a linear world
  • Student recruitment in the digital age
  • The12 big leadership shifts
  • Supporting better mental health in colleges
  • Essential guide to performance data for Governors and Finance Directors
  • Nick Allen, Assistant Principal at Peter Symonds College and member of the SFCA Curriculum and Quality Policy Committee, will introduce this year's SFCA Six Dimensions report, "What happened: the experience of a linear world”, which will explore colleges' first steps into a linear world
  • Focussed sessions on issues such as provider risk and assurance update, and saving money through energy efficiency, and managing conflicts of interest


This event is aimed at Principals, Vice/Deputy Principals, senior managers, Governors and Finance Directors.

Summer Conference full conference rate A -includes awards dinner: £539+VAT (includes access to all conference sessions, refreshments, lunch, ticket to awards dinner and accommodation onsite on day 1 (27th June). Access to all conference sessions, breakfast, refreshments and lunch on day 2 (Thursday 28th June)

Summer Conference full conference rate B - excludes awards dinner: £479+VAT (includes access to all conference sessions, refreshments, lunch and accommodation onsite on day 1 (27th June). Access to all conference sessions, breakfast, refreshments and lunch on day 2 (Thursday 28th June). Please note that this option excludes attendance to the awards dinner on Wednesday 27th June)
